After losing a significant amount of weight, Founder Nicole was faced with 2 full closets of high quality plus size clothing she could no longer wear and a desperate need to rebuild her wardrobe. She began searching for places where she could take her clothing to sell, make a few dollars, and hopefully spend those dollars on some quality used clothing to start rebuilding her wardrobe. Working in the corporate office world for over ten years, Nicole had quite the selection of fashionable clothing, so she felt this should bea breeze! Nicole packed up a couple of boxes of clothing and headed out to visit one of the popular resale shops in town. She was excited to make a few dollars and start shopping. She gladly lugged the boxes into the store and set them up on the counter and went to look around the store while they sorted through her items. Once she returned to the counter, she was informed they could not accept any of the items she brought in, some still with tags on them! She was told the clothing was too “old.” Surprised by this news, she lugged everything back to her vehicle and went down the road to another popular resale shop where she was given similar feedback. Frustrated and confused, Nicole was now on a mission. There was no way she was going to just donate the thousands of dollars’ worth of clothes she had accumulated over the years.
Nicole searched high and low for a plus-size specific resale shop in the Dallas/Fort Worth area to no avail. There was simply nothing! How could this be when 67% of Americans are considered plus-size, wearing a size 14 or larger? How can more than half of the population not have a viable option to resale their clothing and, more importantly, purchase quality used clothing at affordable prices? Going from a size 22 to a size 16, Nicole was still considered plus size. While she loved the stores and brands she’s always worn, she was down to bare minimums in the way of clothing and needed a solid clothing haul to build up the basics without breaking the bank. Thrifting is always fun, however, finding quality plus size clothes at thrift stores is more often a miss than a hit. The more she thought about it, the more mind-blowing it became. We, as plus-sized people, are forced to shop at “specialty” stores while paying top dollar for quality, well fitting clothing, yet there are no options for selling or purchasing gently used, quality plus size clothes? How could more than half of the American population be overlooked…ignored?! And so…..The Frugal Fatty was born!
